Area wise district Hamirpur is the smallest district of Himachal Pradesh. District fall into area of low Shivalik hills and general altitude of district range from 440 mtr to 1250 Mts.(Awah devi is the highest Point of District). District has undulating terrain ranging from flat river valleys, dissected hills to mid mountain ranges. River valleys are very open and transverse by numerous meandering rivers.

Physiographic Description of Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh
Northern part of district is a vast zone of “Low lying deeply dissected barren hills. This terrain has numerous small seasonal streams having dense dendritic pattern. Whole terrain is composed of sedimentary rocks. Splash and Gully erosion is quite prevalent in this belt.
Bateruan hills, is most important hills of this zone forming boundary between Hamirpur and Mandi. Famous Awah devi temple is located on this range. The entire tract is very hilly and sparsely populated and locally known as “Changar”.
In midst of district Jawaliji Dhar/Kali Dhar(Lower Shiwalik) enter the district under the name of Chabutra hills in Nadaun where it cut through by river Beas. It transverse the district in south easterly direction, in mid of district it cut through by Kunah khad there after it is known as Jajarjhak Dhar,district HQ is also located on easternmost extension of this range.
Solah Singi Dhar(Lower Shiwalik) is the most important mountain range of district ,it formed the natural boundary with Una. Northernmost part where it enter the district,it is called as Chamukh Dhar. It is a low lying area dissected by river Beas and its tributaries. As this Dhar transverse to south easterly direction altitude of its increase significantly, here it is known as Solah Singhi Dhar.Only region of district where some sort of agriculture is practiced is Nadaun and surrounding areas. Man Khad and Sukar Khad drained the this region.

Most parts of district is drained by river Beas, which also formed the natural boundary with district Kangra. There are numerous small braided river channels locally called as Khad.
Awah devi is the highest point of district.Bakar khad, Pong khad,Kunah khad and Seer khad are few important rivers arising from here in Radial manner.. A mountain ridge that continue from Awah Devi toward South West direction formed the water divided between Beas and Satluj catchment area.
Bakar Khad rises from Awah Devi formed boundary with Mandi, Sukar Khad rises from Bagru village and flow towards south to join the Satluj. Seer Khad rising from Awah Devi formed the Boundary with Bilaspur.Most rivers of district are non perennial in nature and become active only in monsoon.
A crest line which transverse from North to South , delineate the Beas river basin from Satluj river basin. Approximately %% are of district is drained by Beas and rest % is drained by Satluj.
Geology of Himachal Pradesh
Geologically district is located in Sub Himalayan Sequence. Lower Shiwalik ,Middle Shiwalik and Upper Siwalik formation are presented in the district. Lower Shivalik as usual comprises of sandstone and shale, Middle Shiwalik comprises of sandstone,shale and conglomerate and upper shiwalik comprises of conglomerate, Pebbles and sandstone. Besides these rock strata, new Alluvial fill is found in river valleys.

Hamirpur is most literate district of Himachal Pradesh. Total population of district is about 4,54,768, district has register the growth rate of about 10.19 % since last census of 2001. Hamirpur has highest population density of about 407 person per Square meter. Hamirpur has highest sex ratio in Himachal Pradesh about 1095.
